I've finally decided that I really love The Hunger Games series. I enjoyed the first two books, but I was a little hesitant to praise them too highly. By the end of Mockingjay, I loved all the characters so much, and I was sad to realize they would no longer be a part of my life. (Not quite as sad as I was at the end of Harry Potter, but a similar feeling.) It is really refreshing to see this trilogy on the New York Times Best Sellers List for Young Adult Fiction amongst all the vampire novels. There is so much substance in this trilogy and it brings up so many important issues, and it is combined perfectly with an engaging story, lovable characters, and a nice little love triangle for the romantic types.
Review by klburnside (LibraryThing), August 11, 2015 This is the first time I've ever been waiting on a book. I don't enjoy the sensation...now I know what all of those Barnes & Nobles sleepover-like events were all about for the latest installment of Twilight, Harry Potter, etc. Update: I was counting the days until August 24...my pre-order arrived August 25. I have just started it...can you believe it? I got really busy, really fast. And the worst part is that I'm having trouble remembering important details and this is more work than I would like to have to put into a sequel. Ugh.
Review by engpunk77 (LibraryThing), August 10, 2015 A good conclusion to the series but not as riveting a read as the first.
Review by joeydag (LibraryThing), July 23, 2015 Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games not once, but twice. The second time in an unexpected rescue which deposited her in the mysterious District 13. Long thought to be bombed out, Katniss discovers it is anything but the empty shell portrayed for years. The residents have simply gone underground and developed of new life style. Try as she might Kat cannot seem to fit in, until she is “drafted” into becoming the Mockingjay … symbol of hope to everyone trying to overthrow the capital. There were a few surprises in this book and there were a few shocks in this book, unfortunately the surprises and shocks were not reserved for the ending … I saw that one coming. Overall it was a good book, true to the characters and true to the story thus far, but somehow lacking. I didn’t feel as invested in the characters as in the first book and found myself having a few “awww – come on” moments. I loved the first book and really like the trilogy but with apologies to all, I think it lost a little of its sizzle as it went on.
Review by ChristineEllei (LibraryThing), July 14, 2015 I gave the first book in this series three stars because it took me a long time to get into the time and place. I gave the second book five stars because the characters became so much more developed. The drama seemed to reach a pinnacle. This book, I'm back to three stars. I'm more interested in their personal stories than the larger tale of the war, and I felt like I needed to wade through a lot to get back to the characters I was interest in. There were great parts, just not my cup of tea.
Review by LoriCrane (LibraryThing), July 13, 2015 Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games twice. But now that she's made it out of the bloody arena alive, she's still not safe. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge. Who do they think should pay for the unrest? Katniss. And what's worse, President Snow has made it clear that no one else is safe either. Not Katniss's family, not her friends, not the people of District 12. *Fantastic end to a fantastic trilogy. Not just for YA but for anyone who enjoys a utopian adventure.*
Review by imakittycat (LibraryThing), July 8, 2015 I loved The Hunger Games and I even loved Catching Fire. But I don't love this book. For one, I don't feel the ending was right. I think Katniss deserved to have more of a peaceful end after the Capitol and President Snow was overturned. I wanted to see some more elaboration about her little pieces of happiness. But...when you start Mockingjay, there is no turning back. I couldn't put it down, even though I wanted to. It was incredibly slow at the beginning, and I was so frustrated with Katniss. She wouldn't rise and do anything for such a long time! Then should would and more problems would arise. I just generally don't like the story. Especially with what happens to Peeta and then how Gale turns out. I was unhappy. The deaths are countless and some really good characters die. I won't say who, though. I also think that the plot could have been something better. I think Collins could have taken the plot in another direction, something that resulted in a more peaceful -- not necessarily happy -- end for Katniss. I gave the four stars because Collins still can weave a great story and creates such brilliant imagery. Her characters are gripping and I couldn't shut it because I wanted to know what happened to them. (I almost cried at Prim's part.) If you've started this series, you have to read this. There's no other way around it. Just be prepared to be totally broken to pieces.
Review by SpazzyDragon13 (LibraryThing), July 7, 2015 Kind of a lame ending to an amazing series.
Review by Ellie.Pelto (LibraryThing), July 7, 2015 Wow! Now let's see the trilogy on the big screen!!! But do it justice!!!
Review by jenngv (LibraryThing), June 25, 2015 would give it 6 stars if i could. just mind numbingly good.
Review by Alwaysmidnight (LibraryThing), June 16, 2015 Katniss Everdeine was in district 13. Katniss went back to 12 to get som things, and Katniss saw that 12 was completly demolished! When Katniss went back to the victors houses Katniss got her dad's picture, her dad's jacket,Perm's cat(butterscotch), and oils. A little later Katniss saw Effie. When Katniss, Effie and plutark had a dissussion Katniss decided to be a Mocking Jay, and Cinna(who is dead) had a book of sketches and made Effie promise not to show it to Katniss until she decides to become the mocking Jay herself. On a TV in the cafetria Katniss saw Peeta, and Katniss knew that something was wrong because Peeta was saying things that Peeta wouldn't nornally say. Kantinss went to eight. Saw hospitle that had pople who were diying and asked Katniss if she was going to help and and she said yes so they help up the "good luck sign." then, the captial blew up that hospital and Katniss made a video. Katniss saw Hamage, Katniss got a bow and special arrows, and Katniss got to test them out. Peeta warned 13 that the capital was coming. So, 13 was going into lock down and got into a bunker. 13 was bombed above ground. 13 planned to go get thecaptive people. The capital people were rescued. Then, Annie and Finik got married. Peeta choked Katniss and another time that Peeta saw Katniss he reminded her of the bread memory, and other thigs. Peeta finally knew what Katniss was like and Katniss hated Peeta fo that. Katiss got shot, and then wnated to fight so Katniss and Johanna went to trainning but were very weak. Finik dies. Prem is killed by a bomb that Gale accidently sets off and doesn'y know what Prem was near it.Peeta and Katniss hav a baby.
Review by Emmac.B1 (LibraryThing), June 4, 2015 The Mockingjay is the third and final book to the Hunger Games series. Katniss was taken form the Quarter Quell, back to District 13. District 13 has been around for a long time, but underground , and no one knew about it because it was supposedly destroyed. While she was in the games the Capitol destroyed District 12 to punish Katniss for making a fool of them. The survivors were taken to district 13 . While Katniss was art District 13, Peeta was being held captive at the Capitol getting beaten and brainwashed by the President. Katniss goes around all of the districts, filming, so the citizens of Panem could really see what was going on. Katniss is the "mockingjay",which is supposed to be the savior. Her and some others go on a mission to go and take down president snow . On the way multiple people die and her sister dies as well. Finally they get to president snow and he is supposed to be execution. She ends up killing district 13's president and president snow dies too. Katniss finally grieves for he losses and gets together with Peeta who is now not brainwashed. They have children and that is the end. I thought this book deserved a 5. There were so many events that surprised me, like Peeta almost killing Katniss and Prim dying. There was so much action as well. They had to hide out and run away from many things and I was always wondering what was going to happened next. Everything was explained in good detail so you knew what was going on. The ending surprised me big time. This book had everything for me that I liked, I give it a 5 star.
Review by Kaiah.g1 (LibraryThing), May 28, 2015 I have to say that I'm really really disappointed with how this story ended ( maybe because I'm a sucker for Gale). This book is one of the rare books that I like the movie better than the book story. Katniss is SO FRUSTRATING!
Review by anaesteves (LibraryThing), May 21, 2015 In a sentence - I didn't care for it. Collins wraps up loose ends through unnecessary and unreasonable death and brutality, which is downplayed due to a YA audience. The conclusion is nonsensical, and ultimately detracts from anything the series built towards.
Review by bdtrump (LibraryThing), May 9, 2015 So I finally finished the series, and what a series it was. If only all trilogies could build so well on each other and still surprise us as we turn that last pages. There are tragedies in this episode but then it's all out war. Lies and double crossing are the orders of the day as frail minded 17 year old Mockingjay puts everything she holds dear on line... but for who? I enjoyed this every bit as much as I did the last. I just wish there more. Come December 2015 we will have seen the last movie and probably watched the other three again just before we go. I know I will.
Review by MathewBridle (LibraryThing), May 4, 2015 great book. I loved it.
Review by reneputt (LibraryThing), April 28, 2015 Book suffers from a mix of Shakespearean tragedy death count but YA requirements for a happyish ending. It was a fast engrossing read but it felt unsatisfying at the end.
Review by maliora (LibraryThing), April 24, 2015 SEE SOCK PUPPET. Formal book review. This book is the final book in the Hunger games series. It is dramatic story about how Katniss becomes the leading force of rebellion against the Capitol. She wants nothing more then to end the capitol and bring revenge on the people who killed her district. She is the Mocking Jay and she will lead a rebellion of people against the Capitol. The book ends dramatically as one would not suspect. This is the third and final book of the Hunger games and Katniss and the capitol are going to be changed forever.
Review by sarahetuemmler (LibraryThing), April 20, 2015 My least favorite book in the series however still a great read! A series worth reading over and over.
Review by AngelaFries (LibraryThing), April 20, 2015 This was a tough one for me to read but I'm glad I got through it. There was a lot of action and several surprises and twists. For me, the ending is what really seals the deal for a book and this one did not disappoint. To be honest, if the ending had sucked I would have down-graded my ratings for the entire series. Fortunately, that proved unnecessary. I suppose it is fair to say that I didn't hold the heroine of the story in high esteem until the conclusion of this book.
Review by jimocracy (LibraryThing), April 18, 2015 Science Fiction: This is the last book in the hunger game series. Katniss is put into a tough situation what will she end up deciding to do. I don't want to talk about the book in order to not spoil it for those who are waiting for the movie.
Review by Rsantoyo13 (LibraryThing), April 13, 2015 I'm so sorry but it was so boring and the characters did not develop at all.
Review by englisherna (LibraryThing), April 8, 2015 An excellent finish to the series. Katniss grows up into a believable young woman, still impetuous, still selfish, but learning about forgiveness and needing people. The book doesn't shy away from the grim realities of war that mean the loss of people who don't deserve death and the revelation of ugly character traits in the face of other people's ugliness. It isn't a cheerful book, but I respect it the more for that.
Review by missizicks (LibraryThing), March 31, 2015 This book played havoc with my emotions. I never once really cared about the main character, Katniss, who doesn’t give me a reason to like her. The most appealing characters are minor: Finnick, Johanna, Peeta, Annie, Gale, and Prim. But in this book, the characters I actually like either lose their minds or get blown up! Collins effectively rips out her audiences’ hearts and steps on them. I cried on the last few pages, and not because of a sweet happy ending. Every character you ever liked, or could relate to, or who captured your heart is ripped away from you. I want an alternative ending!!
Review by katieray (LibraryThing), March 29, 2015 I love this book, and my opinion didn't changed after, before and while I read this book. I thought that it was neat for the author to create a series were there, like the maze runner, has a bunch of teenagers fighting for their life. Now normally I don't love romance in a book, but here it just seemed to fit right in. Like it could be a crime if Suzanne Collins didn't have some "lovey-dovey" action going on. I have to admit I'm rather said that the series had to end. Maybe, just maybe, Suzanne can do like a sequel to the series with the first set of characters children(So like Katnises/Catnip and Peter's kids.) Wouldn't that be neat?!
