Review by Tigerdudeboy (Milwaukee County Federated Library System), March 29, 2012 (Reviewed by Nikita M. Cover2Cover Teen Reading Group, Tea Tree Gully Library) 5 Stars. Mockingjay is the spellbinding, much awaited conclusion to the thrilling Hunger Games trilogy. War has broken out between the Capitol and the Rebels. Reluctantly, Katniss agrees to become the ‘Mockingjay’ – a symbol of the rebellion. Peeta and the other captive victors are rescued from the Capitol but Katniss discovers that Peeta has been brainwashed into hating her. When an assault on a Capitol neighborhood goes wrong and Prim is killed; all the evidence points to President Snow ordering the attack. Told otherwise by Snow himself, Katniss begins to doubt President Coin; the Rebel leader. Will she find out who really ordered that fatal assault? Will Katniss ever regain some sense of sanity and a much deserved Happily Ever After? Mockingjay is the perfect ending to the spectacular trilogy which had everyone waiting for bated breath for the ending. I was extremely happy with the way Suzanne Collins wrote Katniss’ character in this book – the way she hovered on the fine line between sanity and insanity. I also loved the development of Gale and Peeta’s characters. An extremely well written book. Awesome, real or not real? REAL!!

Review by PortPhillipLibrary (Port Phillip Library Service), December 6, 2010 i liked the first two, they were amazingly written but Mockingjay fell just short of the mark. i felt that the ending wasn't clear enough and that it was rushed and i guess the author wanted it over and done with. over all it was pretty good. i enjoyed it muchly.

Review by lauren101 (Central Rappahannock Regional Library), April 2, 2010 This story picks up literally in the ashes of the previous one. All is lost, yet there is some hope. The first thing Katniss Everdeen must decide is if she still wants to be the Mockingjay. Only this time it will be most explicitly for those rebelling against President Snow and the Capitol. Once again the story keeps moving, though at not quite the breakneck pace of the previous volumes. There are plenty of interesting puzzles to solve, motives to puzzle over, and battles to fight, both literal and figurative. Four stars for the interesting characters and settings and the palpable senses of mission and paranoia. A star knocked off for the muddled mess of plot and the growing implausibilities. A star added back on for bringing the saga to a satisfying conclusion. If you enjoyed the first two books, you will have to read this one.
Review by zot79 (LibraryThing), August 20, 2023 What I liked about the book: Characters: The author systematically builds (and sometimes eliminates) a healthy stable of characters for the story. Each one has some distinctive characteristics. I loved psycho Peter Issues: The depiction of the impact of violence and war on young people. Reminded me of the 'Tomorrow When the War Began' series in some respects to this. Setting: The dystopia depicted is quite plausible and an interesting situation to depict (to conflicting parties who can't afford to destroy each other, but can't coexist either) Tension: I felt that the book kept the pace and tension up really well never really pausing to endulge too much. What I thought could have been improved: It would have been nice to have more conflict centred around the battle for power in the absence of the two presidents. I thought that was all wrapped up too nicely. Do the same thing but leave the threat of war breaking out and ongoing conflict would have been more in keeping with the theme of the book I thought.
Review by benkaboo (LibraryThing), August 18, 2022 Very enjoyable, easy to read, kept me glued to the page. Lots of surprises. I wish the book had ended differently, on a more positive note, but it was still a good ending.
Review by MarkLacy (LibraryThing), May 29, 2022 While I let too much time elapse between reading Book 2 and 3 (four years), it was fairly easy to get back up to speed with Mockingjay. Katniss hasn’t really gained any more sense, but she’s more outraged here. Also, she spends a whole lot of time recouperating from her dumb, headstrong actions which continually lead her to be injured, while killing those around her. It’s another well written character piece with intense and detailed war and SF elements. Nothing too innovative here, and the story winds up as you might expect. A satisfactory close to The Hunger Games trilogy.
Review by Zumbanista (LibraryThing), March 20, 2019 I just finished this book, and I was not too happy with the ending. I loved the series as a whole, but the ending could have been better in my opinion. I would recommend this book to anyone that has read the other two books in the series.
Review by Kristinah (LibraryThing), May 8, 2018 For some reason this book didn't grab me the way the first and second one did. However I commend the author for giving a realistic ending to a war focused series. I love Collins' style of writing and I am still shocked that this is a Young Adult series. I'd love to see a Hunger Games movie in the future!
Review by JamieBH (LibraryThing), April 3, 2018 I love this trilogy, however I was slightly disappointed with this book. After I finished Catching Fire, I had to start Mockingjay right away. Going from such an amazing read is probably why I didn’t enjoy this one as much as the first two. Don’t get me wrong, it is still an incredible read, it just didn’t feel the same as the books before it. I gave it 4 out of 5 stars because even though it was a bit of a let down, I still really loved it. I wish there was more.
Review by TheTreeReader (LibraryThing), March 31, 2018 I must say for all the action and adventure in the beginning of this book, I could not for the life of me understand the chosen direction for the ending. And that epilogue, I wish I could unread that! ruined the whole thing for me, I will endeavor to pretend it does not exist. However, if you like to see the hero settle down, step right up. Aside from not being my cup of tea, it was a beautifully written book, and a decent ending off of a saga.
Review by thebacklistbook (LibraryThing), March 20, 2018 Jared and I talked about this book for several days after we finished reading it. I could go on and on about this book and series, but I need to write my dissertation.
Review by EdenSteffey (LibraryThing), March 14, 2018 Definitely liked this more on the second time around. Also, I've come to think this is more Peeta's story than Katniss... and broadening the point of view to include him will probably make the movie version even better!
Review by annhepburn (LibraryThing), March 4, 2018 Fabulous... best of the series I think.
Review by kmajort (LibraryThing), February 9, 2018 Oh wow, what a series, and I LOVED it! Katniss survived the Hunger Games, but her life is not the same as her home was destroyed, but her mom and sister are safe. District 13 does exist and that is where there are new leaders, rebels, and another revolution emerging. What lay ahead of her next?
Review by HOTCHA (LibraryThing), February 3, 2018 After the focused, action-oriented first installment, the series grinds and sputters in chunks, and the more the author details the unlikely sci-fi world of The Hunger Games, the shakier its narrative and logical foundations become, until the whole thing culminates in a wankfest of laundry-list horror that mostly had me going, "oh really? And then *that* happened?"
Review by mrgan (LibraryThing), October 30, 2017 This last installment was very different from the first two. The pace was much faster and covered so much more ground. Most of the loose ends were tied up nicely. With so much fighting and killing throughout the series, I was happy for the life is what it is - good enough being enough ending. Making anything too sappy would have ruined it. But it is certainly different from other YA novels I have read in that there was no attempt to sugar the ending to make it "okay." I certainly don't feel very heartened by this series... hoping my next read has some moments to make me smile.
