Book tastes
I'd really like to read something this year that isn't bleak, that is instead fiercely humanist or forward-thinking. I feel like I'm taking too much solace in "comfort reads," so something literate yet hopeful would be nice. Alternatively, some sort of cultural or social history book, maybe with interesting visuals.
In general I like a lot of fiction that mixes genres, especially sci-fi/fantasy, and I'm often drawn to stories set between about 1880 and 1950. I also like "history of things," i.e. the typewriter, rock-and-roll, LEGO, etc. My library is a really good indication of my wider tastes, especially stuff I've rated. Very GLBT friendly and would love to read more diverse writers generally.
Don't get this!
Please avoid overly quippy books like "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" (which I find overkill). I'd rather have a book that inspires wonder than a funny book.
Nothing overtly religious or brutally violent. No books that focus mostly on romance.
Other notes
If you're going to buy me a Doctor Who book, please make sure I don't have it first. I prefer the classic series.
